Welcome to the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice! CCJ is a research unit and academic department in the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Our multiple missions include scholarly research, education, and professional and community service. First, CCJ achieves national and regional distinction through excellence by producing theoretically-grounded scholarship that informs local, state, and national policy and that advances knowledge in the fields of criminology and criminal justice. Second, CCJ offers rigorous, broad-based graduate and undergraduate educational programs centered on the scientific study of crime, criminals, and society’s reaction to both, and structured to foster the development of students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical, and communication abilities. Third, CCJ provides faculty expertise and technical support to assist local, state, and national entities concerned with issues related to criminology and criminal justice.

The Graduate Program Director is Dr. George Burruss, the Undergraduate Program Director is Dr. Christopher Mullins, and our department has one of the best advisors on campus in Mr. Michael Harbin.
We welcome our new and returning students to another year of study in the BA program in Criminology and Criminal Justice! During your time here, we hope you will enjoy your classes, participate in research, take part in the Criminal Justice Student Association, and other special events. This fall we also welcome a new class of graduate students into the MA program, including some who will serve as teaching and research assistants to the faculty. In recent news, Drs. Daryl Kronerand Christopher Mullins have both been granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Kimberly Kempf-Leonard was recently selected as the new Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Congratulations! Finally, we are pleased to announce the approval of our doctoral program in Criminology and Criminal Justice and hope to admit our first class of students in the near future.
